Cold Hardy Cactus and Succulents from Other Lands

These plants have evolved to resist the cold in their native lands and can survive the cold here.

  
OT001: Euphorbia clavarioides v. truncata (Lion’s Spore) SOLD OUT!! We are working on growing more.  Watch this space. A beautiful succulent from Lesotho in southern Africa.  Seed collected by Panayoti Kelaidis in 1995.  Zone 5.  Thick stems one half inch wide and 1-2 inches long form dense cushions, 3” high and 12” wide.  Small leaves and small yellow flowers in summer.  Best in rock garden with perfect drainage.   Zone 5.  One year old plants, $10

OT002: Maihueniopsis darwinii   This Opuntia relative is a compact, clump former from Patagonia.  I would rate it at Zone 4.  I’ve not seen flowers in 12 years of culture.  Spherical “pads” are heavily spined and fragile (come apart easily).  Cool plant, cutting $6

OT003:  Maihueniopsis poepigii  A Patagonian opuntiad.  Small cholla-like stems.  6” high by 18” wide.  Shaggy spines on finger-sized stems.  Small yellow flowers in June.  Zone 5. Prefers and tolerates more moisture than most opuntiads.  3 year old plants 4-6” across  $10.

OT004  Gymnocalycium bruchii:  NEW!  Bruch’s Chin Cactus.  This little gem is a great bloomer with pink flowers in May.  At home in the rock garden or in a container.  3-4 inches high and wide, flattened globe.  3” plants $8.

OT005  Mammillaria meiacantha  Little Nipple Cactus   The hardiest Mammallaria species from central New Mexico.  Flat, single spherical plants with a crown of light pink flowers in May.  Plants grow to 6 inches in diameter.  3 year old plants $10.

OT006  Echinocactus texensis   The Horse Crippler Cactus    Probably the hardiest barrel cactus.  Curved fish hook type spines on flattened barrels to over one foot in diameter.  Zone 5/6. Beautiful 4”, 3 year old plants $12.

OT007  Aloe aristata  Torch Flower Aloe.  Seed collected by Panayoti Kelaidis in Lesotho, Southern Africa.  It’s the highest altitude collection that we know of.  It has overwintered in Denver with snow cover.  Generally considered Zone 7.  Colorful orange flowers on foot tall stems in early summer.  3 year old plant $15.
